10 Commandments for Beautiful Color

From Allure.com, we have the top 10 ways to make sure that you hair color is as awesome as it can be.

1.       Get a Trim first- make sure your hair is as healthy as possible before you begin your coloring by trimming off any split ends.

2.       Make sure your color is really YOURS- don’t choose a color that won’t work with your skin tone and undertones.

3.       Make sure you have enough- if you’re coloring at home and have long hair, be sure to buy 2 boxes to make sure your hair color is consistent.

4.       Keep in under wraps- but just while the dye is in- wrapping it in a shower cap or plastic helps it to absorb and to keep it from dripping into your face or onto your neck.

5.       Communicate Your Color Desires- when you’re in the salon, you might be tempted to use the words you hear there, but it’s really best to use the words that you would to describe your ideal color to a friend, so you make sure you get your point across.

6.       Blonde in Baby Steps- If you want to go from brunette to blonde, you can, but don’t go more than 1 or 2 shades per appointment- all in all, it should take 4 to 6 sessions, so make sure you’re prepared for a long-term commitment.

7.       Quick fix for too intense color- if you’re dyeing your hair at home, and your color came out too dark or intense, a quick deep conditioning mask can go a long way to toning it down.

8.       Avoid hair hurters- we all know how heat, chlorine, the sun and too much styling can damage your hair, and that goes double if you want to dye your hair- the healthier it is, the better your color will look.

9.       Protect your Color- using color protecting shampoo and deep conditioner may seem like no brainer, but it’s a crucial step to keeping your color looking bright, shiny, glossy and gorgeous.

10.   Don’t let Grays go- it might be tempting to avoid the topic altogether, but if you aren’t ready to embrace your grays, make sure you tackle them either with a semi-permanent or spot correcting color to make sure they don’t get out of hand and leave you with a look you don’t love.
