Healthy Hair At Home, Part II

Last time, we talked about how important nutrition is for the health of your hair, but there’s more to it than just eating the right foods.  There are a lot of other things you can do to make sure your hair is as healthy as possible.  For starters, don’t wash your hair more often than you need to.  Many women only need to wash their hair 2 or 3 times a week.  If you do wash your hair every day, start skipping days.  You can use dry shampoo if you’re worried your hair will be a little bit oily at first.

It’s also important to make sure that you’re using the right type of shampoo and conditioner.  Most brands clearly label their products with what they type of hair they are designed for and what conditions they can help, so make sure you choose the right one.

Once you have washed and conditioned your hair the right way, you should let it air dry if possible.  If you don’t have time for that, make sure that you are using products to defend your hair from the heat of the dryer.  Another hair health tip is to wait until your hair is dry to comb or brush it.  Hair is weakest when it’s wet, and brushing or combing it then can lead to more breakage and even split ends.  Silk pillowcases are another well-kept secret to beautiful hair.  They can help prevent any breakage from tossing and turning in your sleep.

If your hair health isn’t quite where you want it yet, you can also use a hair mask once or twice a week to give your hair extra nutrients and care.
