Common Straightening Mistakes

Do you often want to straighten your hair, but struggle with your flatiron?  When used correctly, a flatiron is a great tool for making your hair straight and frizz free, but many people make these common mistakes, leaving their hair less than lustrous.

From allure.com, here are some of the most common ways women sabotage their heat routine and how to avoid them.

1.    Too much heat- it might be tempting to turn the temperature on your flatiron all the way up, but realistically, no hair type needs it set any hotter than 410 degrees.
2.    No Protection- many companies make thermal sprays that are designed to protect your hair from heat that can be damaging.  A no-hold style is probably your best bet.
3.    Getting stuck on repeat- Don’t keep going over and over the same section of hair.  If your hair is curly, do as much loosening as possible by brushing out your curls, and then just go over a section once or twice, slowly and smoothly.  Remember that stopping between will leave creases, so make sure it’s in one fluid motion.
4.    Going too straight- it creates a much better look if you straighten in a C-shape, letting the ends of your hair flow under your face.
5.    Creating Steam- DO NOT FLATIRON WET HAIR- end of story
6.    Thinking Big is Best- you might be tempted to think that a large iron will cut down on the time it takes to straighten your hair, but in reality, you need a smaller iron in order to be able to get close to the roots, where hair is the curliest.  A one inch iron is your best option.

So now that you’re armed with these tips, get ready for your best straight hair yet!
